Man faces child abuse charge

JACKSONVILLE - A Jacksonville man has been charged with inflicting a brain injury on a 4-month-old child.

Leslie Crain Wearn, 40, of Caveness Drive, was charged Friday by the Jacksonville Police Department with intentional child abuse causing serious physical injury.

According to warrants, Wearn caused bleeding on the left side of the child's head between the brain and the skull.

"It would appear that one of our juvenile detectives, Detective (Trudy) Allen, was contacted by Pitt (County) Memorial Hospital in Greenville on (April) 24th in reference to a child abuse case. It looks like a case of shaken baby syndrome," said JPD Lt. Sean Magill.

The status of the child and Wearn's relation to the child were unavailable.

Bond was set at $2,500.
